Fil-foreign athletes will spice up the composition of the Philippine national water polo team next year.

Team skipper Dale Evangelista said this as they get ready for bigger challenges in 2020.

“Many have expressed interest in trying out for the national team,” said Evangelista.

The national squad recently claimed the silver medal with their 14-11 win over Malaysia in the water polo competition of the 30th Southeast Asian Games at the New Clark City Aquatic Center in Tarlac.

In the finals, the Filipinos came back from a 6-5 deficit against a Malaysian side determined to score a win.

Evangelista said new players will be needed when the national squad seeks to join the Asian Championships, which be held in the Philippines.

The silver medal that the Philippines got in water polo was the first for the nationals in a long while.

The last time the Philippines had podium finish was in 2009, when it settled for the games’ silver. The national team also took the silver in 2005 and in 2007.

The Philippines missed the podium in the 2011 SEA Games and from there, new faces have been added to the national team.

After missing action in 2013, the national team returned to the SEA Games in 2015 and placed fifth overall.

Two years ago in Kuala Lumpur, the squad again placed fifth overall, missing the podium with a close loss to host Malaysia.
