Banawa chessfest set; Antonio is speaker

Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio Jr. has been invited as the guest of honor and speaker I the Open Kitchen Rapid Chess tournament, also known as the IM Joel Banawa Chess Cup, which kicks off on Sunday. at the Open Kitchen, Rockwell Business Center-Sheridan, Highwayhills, Greenfields District in Mandaluyong City.

The tournament, held in honor of the late IM Rolly Martinez, will be divided into two divisions: kiddies and juniors.

After a short message, the 13-time Philippine Open champion Antonio will lead the ceremonial moves during the opening rites slated at 10:30 a.m., which will usher in hostilities in the tournament sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and supervised by arbiters from Chess Arbiter Union of the Philippines.

Major backers for the one-day event are Open Kitchen, Phoenix Chess Academy, Three Knights Printing Services, ChiliJuan, Otsuka-Solar Philippines Inc. (Pocari Sweat), Core of Dreams, Mega C, Ripples Daily and PTV Sports.

Also expected to grace the event is National Chess Federation of the Philippines Director Atty. Cliburn Anthony Orbe.

GM Antonio and Atty. Orbe will occupy the top boards during the ceremonial moves.

Other invited guests include Philippine Executive Chess Association president Dr. Jenny Mayor,  China Aurelio and Mimi Casas of Open Kitchen, Emz Forrosuelo of Otsuka-Solar Philippines Inc. (Pocari Sweat) and Jerome Intac of ChiliJuan.

According to Mc Daniel “Danilo” Ebao of Three Knights Printing Services,  organizer of the chess event, Antonio is a perfect choice as guest speaker. “Most of the young kids today look up to him as their idol,” Ebao said.

Antonio recently topped the Open Kitchen tournament last August 5, and followed it up by winning the senior’s event of the IGB Dato’ Tan Chin Nam International Chess Open at the Cititel Mid Valley held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last Aug. 18, as well as the 2nd Torrevillas Knights Cup Open Rapid chess tournament held at Samar College in Catbalogan City, Samar last Aug. 21.

Antonio, 57, is scheduled to represent the country in the FIDE (World Chess Federation) World Seniors Chess Championship to be held on Nov. 11 to 24 in Bucharest, Romania.

Meanwhile, Angele Tenshi Biete, a  Grade 8 pupil of De La Salle Santiago Zobel School will defend his title in the kiddies’ 14-years-old and below division in the tournament which offers a cash prize of P5,000 plus trophy, medal and a Brand New Leap Digital chess clock to the champion.

Participants in the juniors’ division (15-20 years old) will likewise dispute the top purse of P5,000 plus a trophy, medal and a Brand New Leap Digital chess clock.

Registration fee for Kiddies and Juniors is P500 while on-site registration is P600.
