FOR John  Vic de Guzman, playing for the national men’s volleyball team is a blessing and privilege.

Many good things have happened to him because of this.

For one, De Guzman earned a break in the movies because of this. Second, the College of St. Benilde Blazers won their first NCAA men’s volleyball crown with him around for the last time.

“This is a once in a lifetime experience na madadala ko hanggang sa pagtanda ko. Magiging history ito sa buhay ko,” said De Guzman after Monday’s benefit game ‘Clash of Heroes’ at the Arena in San Juan

He believe that he still a lot of opportunities to play for other clubs and companies. But De Guzman chose to set them aside for now because of his priorities.

“Puede pa naman ako maglaro sa ibang team or company, Marami pa namang seasons,” said De Guzman.

Because of this attitude, national coach Sammy Acaylar has decided to give him a slot to the national squad as early as April.

Because they did not show up, Acaylar said the coaching staff  has closed the door on star players like Marck Espejo, Ish Polvorosa and other members of the national pool.

Also considered out are Cignal players Peter Torres, Mark Alfafara, Bonjomar Castel, Herschel Ramos, Erikson Ramos, Lorenzo Capate Jr. and Anjo Pertierra.

“Tapos na ‘yung patience ko sa kanila. During our practice, sometimes hindi sila nag-e-ensayo, I understand dahil marami silang liga (like the UAAP), inintindi ko lahat ‘yun,” said Acaylar.

Acaylar is now considering the likes of Ranran Abdilla, Dave Cabaron, Greg Dolor, Esmail Kasim, Relan Taneo, Jason Uy, Manuel Doliente, Mark Deximo, Jack Kalingking, Reyson Fuentes and Kheeno Franco.

He is also evaluating Edward Camposano, John Carascal, Eddiemar Kasim, Alfred Valbuena, Louwie Chavez, Peter Quiel, Rey Taneo, Kenneth Sarcena, Geuel Asia, JC David, and Jeffrey Malabanan.

The exhibition match served as the final scrimmage before the coaching staff reveals the 18-man lineup for the Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur in August.

The coaching staff will announce the 18-man lineup in a week’s time.

Meanwhile, officials of club team Cignal HD are hoping that national team officials keep their doors open for Cignal players.

“While we’re grateful for this opportunity, it is unfortunate that we have received the official invite and advise for some of our players to participate in the Clash of Heroes only two days before the event,” the statement said.

The Cignal management, in a letter, appealed to volleyball officials to give their players a chance to wear the national colors.
