Veteran spiker Dolly Grace Verzosa’s two well-placed spikes in the final set helped carry the Jose Rizal University Lady Bombers to their first triumph yesterday in the resumption of the 95th National Collegiate Athletic Association women’s volleyball tournament.

The 21-year-old Verzosa’s successive hits came during a 7-1 run and powered the Lady Stags to a 22-25, 25-19, 21-25, 25-21, 15-8 verdict over the San Sebastian College Lady Stags at the FilOil-Flying V Sports Center in San Juan.

Verzosa, one of the team’s three most experienced players, led with 16 points for the Lady Bombers, who picked up their first win and joined the College of St. Benilde Lady Blazers and the Arellano University Lady Chiefs in the early lead.

The Lady Stags came close for the last time, 7-8, on a kill from Sherielyn Bigata.

With Shannai Requierme making 13 points, SSC started their season without ailing coach Roger Gorayeb.

“Buena mano,” said JRU coach Ma. Anna Tioseco, who added that this gave the team confidence, and in their quiet to reach the Final Four.

The Lady Bombers forced a deciding set after they broke away on a couple of errors by the Lady Stags in the fourth set, 20-17.

They will next meet the Lady Chiefs on Thursday next week.

The Lady Chiefs, who got 19 points from Regine Arocha, posted their second straight victory at the expense of the Mapua University Lady Cardinals, 25-13, 25-20, 25-12.

In other matches, June Lacsina fired 12 points for the JRU Heavy Bombers in their 25-14, 27-25, 25-14 stopping of the SSC Stags in the men’s division.

The Heavy Bombers share the men’s lead with the University of Perpetual Altas and the Arellano University Chiefs.

In the junior side, Jessie Rubin unloaded the SSC Junior Stags, who prevailed over the JRU Junior Bombers, 25-15, 25-15, 25-22.

The Junior Stags are in the lead with the Lyceum Junior Pirates and the Perpetual Help Junior Altas.
