2nd PH University Volleyball League set in April

It’s all systems go for the second staging of the Philippine University Volleyball League, which opens on April 28, 2023, at the newly-built Polytechnic University of the Philippines stadium.

The tournament, which is sanctioned by the Federation for School Sports Association of the Philippines, the only university sports federation in the country that is recognized by the International University Sports Federation, will have eight universities taking part in both the men’s and women’s divisions.

The 2nd PUVL is the official qualifying tournament for the 21st ASEAN University Games to be held in Surabaya, Indonesia in July 2024. The confirmation came following an Executive Secretariat meeting held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last March 11.

As per tradition, FESSAP president Edwin C. Fabro has been invited to grace the opening ceremony on April 28.

Moreover, FESSAP Chairman of the Board Alvin Tai Lian and Executive Vice President Prof. Robert Milton A. Calo will also be in attendance to give citation plaques to the champions in the men’s and women’s divisions of the 1st PUVL Championship.

Others expected to attend the opening ceremonies are FESSAP Vice Presidents Dr. Jesus Rodrigo Torres, Col. Ariel Querubin, Commissioner Felix Tiukinhoy Jr., and members of the PUVL Board of Trustees.

The first PUVL competitions saw the University of Perpetual Help System Dalta romp away with the men’s title and Mapua University take home the women’s crown.

Both Mapua and the University of Perpetual will be back to defend their respective titles in the 2nd PUVL, hoping to qualify for the 21st ASEAN University Games in Surabaya next year.

The competing teams in the both the men’s and women’s divisions are Asian Institute of Maritime Studies, University of Perpetual Help System Dalta-Las Piñas, Mapua University, Polytechnic University of the Philippines, Dela Salle University-Dasmariñas-Cavite, Cavite State University, Bataan Peninsula State University and Technological University of the Philippines.

The FESSAP, which has been sending university athletes to the biennial Summer Universiade since 2011, bringing home two gold medals and two silvers overall in five editions, is an active member of the ASEAN University Sports Council, whose office is located in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. The AUSC has been the organizer of the ASEAN University Games since 1980.

The College Center of ESports is being considered to do the Live Streaming of the games in the 2nd PUVL via the YouTube Channel.
