HD Spikers trump Crossovers to wrest solo lead

Ranged against a winless rival, unbeaten Cignal HD rode out a first-set test and went on to fashion out a 25-23, 25-16, 25-18 romp over Chery Tiggo and regain the solo lead with a third straight victory in the Premier Volleyball League Invitational Conference at the Filoil Flying V Centre last night.

After pulling off a steal of a win in the opener, the HD Spikers re-asserted their might and won the next two with plenty to spare, breaking away midway through in both frames through their sustained firepower aided by the Crossovers’ erratic outing.

Ces Molina spikes another Cignal HD romp vs Chery Tiggo with a 16-hit effort

Ces Molina stayed in attack mode, firing away 16 hits after a 20-point and 17-point showing in a four-set win over Army and a five-set escape over Choco Mucho, respectively

Earlier, Creamline also walked off with a breeze of a win as it smothered PLDT Home Fibr, 25-22, 25-16, 25-21, but slipped to solo second after a week of high-pressure action in the mid-season conference of the league organized by Sports Vision.

The HD Spikers blew an early lead in the first set but charged back from 13-18 down behind Molina and Roselyn Doria while pouncing on the Crossovers’ slew of attack errors, the last by Mylene Paat that shattered the 23-all count.

Arielle Estranero closed out the set with an ace.

Coach Clarence Esteban had used probably every trick in the book to motivate his wards, to no avail as the Crossovers struggled on their set-up plays, net defense and reception, imperiling their semifinal bid with a third straight loss in the seven-team field fighting for the top four slots in a single round robin elims.

The Crossovers closed to within, 13-16, in the third frame but Angeli Araneta sparked a fiery Cignal surge with a hit and back-to-back aces, leading to another 6-0 run for the victory that primed up the HD Spikers for their keenly awaited duel with the Cool Smasher in Sta. Rosa, Laguna next Thursday.

Chery Tiggo actually saved four match points from 14-24 but the 10-point deficit proved too much of a hurdle for the Crossovers to overcome as Klarisa Abriam finished them off on a joust.
