Lady Warriors take on Perlas, eye vital PVL victory

Fired-up Pocari-Air Force tries to close in on the third semifinal berth as it faces a BanKo-Perlas side also out to bolster its own Final Four drive, guaranteeing a slam-bang duel in the quarterfinal round of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference today.

The Lady Warriors swept their first two games in the single round phase with another victory in their 4 p.m. clash at the Filoil Flying V Center in San Juan putting the defending champions within a win from joining the Creamline Cool Smashers and the PayMaya High Flyers in the semifinal round of the season-opening conference of the league organized by Sports Vision.

But the Perlas Spikers are also going flat out for a follow-up to their straight-set romp over a skidding Tacloban Fighting Warays last weekend and boost their own semis bid in the tournament backed by Mikasa and Asics.

BaliPure-NU, which nipped Iriga-Navy in five, also guns for a second straight victory against PetroGazz at 6 p.m. in another match tipped to go down-to-the-wire.

The Angels bowed to the Lady Warriors but bounced back with a victory over the Warays last Wednesday and back on track for a crack at one of the last two semis seats.

Tacloban and Iriga-Navy, toting identical 0-2 cards, knock each out from the race as they tangle in the 2 p.m. opener of an explosive triplebill.

PLDT, meanwhile, shoots for its second win and the solo lead as it collides with Army at 10 a.m. in their side of the quarterfinals in men’s play.

The women’s matches will be aired live on ABS-CBN Sports+Action Channel 23, ABS-CBN S+A HD Channel 166, LIGA on SkyCable Channel 86, LIGA HD on SkyCable Channel 183 and via streaming while the men’s games can be viewed via streaming.

Pocari coach Jasper Jimenez is pinning his hopes again on imports Arielle Love and Madeline Palmer with local ace and skipper Myla Pablo also bracing for a tough outing against BanKo-Perlas’ reinforcements Lakia Bright and Jutarat Montripila along with locals Amy Ahomiro, Joy Dacoron, Sue Roces, Jem Ferrer and Gizelle Tan.

The young crew of BaliPure, including high schoolers Joyme Cagande, Faith Nisperos, Alyssa Solomon, Mhicaela Belen and Princess Robles, is also gearing up for a fierce showdown with the Angels in a crucial game that could make or break one’s semis drive.

Imports Janisa Johnson and Alexis Matthews of BaliPure hope to neutralize PetroGazz counterparts Olena Lymareva-Flink and Anastasiia Trach while the Angels’ locals of Cherry Nunag, Stephanie Mercado, Relea Saet, Mary Mendrez, Alyssa Layug and Maricar Baloaloa seek to stamp their class over their younger rivals.
