NU faces dangerous Adamson

LOCKED in a four-way logjam from third to sixth place to start the second round, National University hopes to make another winning run as it battles dangerous Adamson University in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament at the Filoil Flying V Centre. Gametime is at 2 p.m.

Defending champion De La Salle, dropped to second with a 5-2 card after closing the first round with a four-set loss to fierce rival Ateneo over the weekend, plays Far Eastern University in the day’s other game at 4 p.m.

The Lady Spikers hope to duplicate their 29-27, 25-22, 25-23 win over the Lady Tamaraws in the first round, as coach Ramil de Jesus is pulling all the stops to avoid losing two in a row.

After an alarming three-game skid that put their Final Four aspirations in question, the Lady Bulldogs finally remembered what it takes to win games.

NU showed steely resolve to beat University of the Philippines, 25-23, 25-17, 22-25, 18-25, 15-12, last Sunday to wound up with a 4-3 record.

Coach Roger Gorayeb saw a solid Lady Bulldogs team against the Lady Maroons, with setter Jasmine Nabor connecting well with 6-foot-5 Jaja Santiago, while Risa Sato and Jorelle Singh also delivered.

“Winning this game will make them back from their right senses na babalik yung tiwala nila,” said Gorayeb. “We have to work hard again and practice hard.”

NU is ranked sixth in the elims behind UP, FEU and University of Santo Tomas. One misstep by the Bustillos-based spikers in this crucial stretch of the season could be fatal.

The Lady Bulldogs definitely will not take the hapless Lady Falcons lightly.

Adamson University has dropped all of its seven games in the first round – and 14th straight since last season – as it failed to avoid a shutout following last Sunday’s 22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 18-25 defeat to University of the East.

With another lost campaign looming, the Lady Falcons of coach Air Padda is hoping for the best by improving their game.

In the men’s division, titleholder Ateneo shoots for its eighth straight win against FEU in the televised 10 a.m. duel, while UP and De La Salle take the floor at 8 a.m.
