Kingad’s future looks bright after promising performance against Johnson

Danny “The King” Kingad goes back to the drawing board after his second defeat in ONE Championship.

Kingad suffered a unanimous decision loss to Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson in the ONE Flyweight World Grand Prix Championship Final at ONE: CENTURY PART I at the Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo, Japan

The Baguio City native was surprised by his performance yesterday – despite falling short in his goal of winning the Grand Prix and collecting his ticket for a second shot at the ONE Flyweight World Title.

After all, not many expected him to hang on the ground with “Mighty Mouse.”

“I didn’t expect what happened. I didn’t expect that I could showcase those grappling skills and I can take down DJ and somehow corner him. I still need to review and watch the fight so I could learn what I could have done better,” Kingad said.

Johnson is arguably the greatest mixed martial artist of this generation and has only lost once in his last 17 matches. For the 24-year-old, he expected Johnson to be a handful, and the Madisonville, Kentucky native came in with tons of momentum.

Nevertheless, the Team Lakay representative showed he is a world-class athlete and he did not let himself get walloped by the relentless offense of the American.

“I think I did a great job. Heading into this fight, I knew that he’d maximize his strengths against me.”

After standing his ground against the greatest of all time, “The King” would not mind facing Johnson again in the future – or maybe even rematch reigning ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes.

“Of course I want that. But let’s wait for the result of Adriano vs DJ and let’s see. I think I did a great job. Even though I lost the match, but I put up everything.”

"[If not DJ or Adriano] I’ll be ready to face anyone.”

ONE Championship returns in less than two weeks with ONE: DAWN OF VALOR on 25 October at the Istora Senayan in Jakarta, Indonesia.
