The country’s top female fencing coaches and athletes shared centerstage in the latest webinar episode of the Philippine Sports Commission’s Rise Up Shape Up last Saturday, entitled “En-Garde: Fencing and Setting Boundaries”.

The episode featured woman fencer and coach Wendy Mendoza, who demonstrated and discussed the different disciplines, equipment, outfit, and rules of the sport.

Mendoza was joined by Philippine Fencing Association head coach Veena Nuestro, who shared her insights on the joy and challenges of her job, along with the country’s best women fencers Samantha Catantan and Jylyn Nicanor.

Catantan made the Philippines proud with her All-American honors recognition at the Pennsylvania State University, winning a bronze medal in the women’s foil in the 2021 NCAA Championships. She also won a pair of bronzes in the individual and team foil during the country’s hosting of the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Meanwhile, Nicanor who is also a gold medal winner in the 30th SEA Games recently led the national fencing team’s campaign in the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament held in Tashkent, Uzbekistan last April.

“Fencing requires a sharp mind, quick feet, and a lithe body. Their training enhances these and extends these characteristics to their mental and emotional health as well. We are proud to have national fencers that can combat and conquer challenges in and out of the playing field.” said PSC Women in Sports oversight Commissioner Celia Kiram.

“Their success does not only bring a sense of national pride, but also show women’s strength and empowerment,” added Kiram.

Further, Kiram also commended the support of Philippine Fencing Association President and Ormoc Mayor Richard Gomez for the national fencing team when they conducted a bubble training in Ormoc City, Leyte.

PSC’s Rise Up, Shape Up is a weekly web series streamed via Facebook and YouTube every Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m.
