Unheralded Jake Tasi Tumaliuan, a 31-year-old tricycle driver from Tuguegarao City, is the new chess sensation as he spearheaded his team Cagayan Kings into a cliff-hanging 11-10 victory over heavy favorites Pasig Kings Pirates at the start of 2021 Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Chess League on online tournament on Saturday, January 16, 2021 at the lichess platform.

Tumaliuan upset Grandmaster Darwin Laylo in their rapid play match.

“Panalo na ako sa game natalo pa. Che-checkmate ko na sana eh bumagsak oras ko. I thought may 3 seconds pa ako at s’ya (Jake Tasi Tumaliuan) naman ay 1 second,” said Laylo, a top player of multi-titled Philippine Army chess team and member of the National Team.

Tumaliuan’s teammates—Emerson Aquio, Robert Mania and Jefferson Villarde—won their respective matches from boards five to seven to underscore the Kings Pirates’ strong showing in the blitz event.

Aquio upset Italy-based National Master Exfelicos Bolico on board 5, Mania toppled Cromwell Sabado on board 6 while Tugade crushed Carl Espallardo on board 7.

Pasig Kings Pirates’ two victories came courtesy of Italy based Grandmaster Roland Salvador and National Master Rudy Ibanez on board 2 and board 4 who beat Jojo Foz and Lamberto Arugay, respectively.

Cagayan Kings Head Coach John Robert Bumatay had something to say to his team

Earlier, Cagayan Kings bowed to Pasig Kings Pirates, 2-5, in their blitz encounter.

The format of the tournament is 1 point for a win in blitz while 2 points for a win in the rapid play.

Cagayan Kings’ next assignment will be 7 p.m., Wednesday, January 20 Antipolo Cobras and San Juan Predators.
