PECA to start National Execs Online Chess Championship

The Philippine Executive Chess Association, in coordination with the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and Philippine Arbiters Chess Confederation, will stage the second leg of the 2020 National Executive Online Chess Championship on October 18, 2020, 7 p.m. at lichess.org.

The playing format of the tournament will be a nine-round Swiss System with a time control of five minutes plus two seconds increment for each player.

The champion will receive P10,000. The second P5,000; third P3,000; fourth P2,000; and fifth P1,000. Top Lady, Senior (65 and above), Senior (55 and above), 2000 and below, 1900 and below, 1800 and below and Unrated will each earn P1,000.

“It will be open to all qualified members of Philippine Executive Chess Association whose NCFP Ratings are 2200 and below. Payment/renewal of PECA membership fee for 2020-2021 is required,” said PECA president Dr. Fred Paez who is also NCFP Assistant Executive Director for Southern Luzon.

The event is supported by Engineer Roderick Argel and Engineer Richard Sison of Ontario, Canada who were members of the National University High School Chess Team that won the 1985-86 UAAP Chess Championship (High School Division). Other members of the team were Dr. Alfredo Paez, Danilo Taopa, Rodolfo Panopio Jr., and Nelson Taopa. Coach is the late Prof. Victor Javier.

Meanwhile, the Far Eastern University-Edmonton reigned supreme in the Lichess Team Battle by beating Philippine Christian University-Toronto, 145-108 last week.

Edmonton, Canada-based Team Captain Alvin “Babin Smith” Guevarra, a former member of FEU Chess Team batch 94, fielded a stronger line up as tournament MVP Sherwin Tiu proved unstoppable to lead FEU-Edmonton to victory.

With his last round wins against Genghis Imperial, Tiu finished with Arena 52 points.

National Master Joey Florendo chipped inn 30 points followed by John Ranel Morazo who totes 24 points and Christopher Megino with 21 markers.

Other members of the Far Eastern University-Edmonton chess team are Canadian National Master Zulfikar Sali (18), Butch Villavieja (14), Belzar Valencia (12) and Ritchie Evangelista (11).
