Futuristic metallic torches unveiled for Milan-Cortina 2026 Winter Games
A year before the 2026 Winter Games, organizers of the Milan-Cortina Olympics unveiled the official torches for both the Olympic and Paralympic torch relays during joint presentations held in Milan and Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan.
The torches boast a sleek, minimalistic design and are made primarily from recycled materials, in keeping with the Games’ commitment to sustainability.
Designed by renowned Italian architect Carlo Ratti, the torches reflect a modern yet functional aesthetic.
The Olympic version is crafted from an aluminum and brass alloy with a blue-green hue, while the Paralympic torch features a distinct bronze color. Each torch is equipped with a refillable fuel canister that can be used up to ten times—a conscious move to reduce the number of torches produced and minimize environmental impact.
“The design of the torch is intended to enhance the flame itself, the true essence of the torch relay,” said organizers. “The idea is to direct focus towards the flame, leaving the torch almost in the background. By concentrating on the simplicity of the design, the flame becomes the main protagonist.”
The Olympic flame is set to arrive in Rome on December 4 and will begin its symbolic journey across Italy on December 6, lighting the path toward the 2026 Winter Olympics, scheduled for February 6–22. The Paralympic Games will follow from March 6–15.
The unveiling marks a significant milestone in the countdown to the Milan-Cortina Games, blending tradition, innovation, and sustainability in a symbol that will carry the Olympic spirit across the host nation.”
