Pasig City teenage chesser places 2nd in Prague Open

Prodigious Nika Juris Nicolas dod the country proud by placing second in the Prague Open 2025 23rd International Chess Festival in the Czech Republic over the weekend.

Just 12 years old, the Pasig City-based chesser added another hardware to her growing list of trophies after finishing second in the event for players with 2000 FIDE rating and below.

Juris was actually tied for No. 2 with German Adreas Schindele, Czech Frantisek Korenek and Petr Hrebicek and Georgian Giorgi Bekauri with seven points apiece but took second after emerging with the highest tiebreaker.

Greek Spyridon Ilandzis claimed the crown with 7.5 points.

Nicolas, who had six wins and two draws against a lone defeat, also came out as the best female player and No. 1 I the 1600-1699 rating category.

It was another international trophy for Nicolas after bringing home two in Chinese Taipei in June and in Krakow, Poland last year.

Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna, one of Nicolas’ trainers that also included GM Jayson Gonzales, said she’s proud of what her student had achieved.

“Nika is the most hardworking, and determined student I ever handled, she truly deserves these awards,” said Frayna, who also saluted Nicolas’ proud parents and lawyers Nikki and Carlo.

Nicolas is hoping to continue to reap honors when she suits up for another meet in Marienbad also in Prague next week.
