Myanmar battles Indonesia for Sepak Takraw crown

Powerhouse Myanmar and Indonesia arranged an explosive gold medal match while the Philippines settled for a bronze in the sepak takraw men’s team doubles event of the 30th SEA Games here at the Subic Gymnasium.

With reigning champion Thailand not fielding a squad in the event this year, Myanmar and Indonesia did not waste their chances as they dispatched their semi-finals foes to set up a finals date for the men’s team doubles’ title.

They will lock horn in the gold medal tussle set at 3:30 pm today

Myanmar advanced after frustrating the Philippines in front of its home crowd, 2-1, while Indonesia took a convincing win over Vietnam, 2-0.

Bothered by a roaring Filipino home fans, Myanmar actually started on a wrong foot as it suffered a stunning 15-21, 17-21 defeat in the first regu.

But the Burmese regained ground in the succeeding frames, getting the better of the Filipinos with huge 21-16, 21-13 win in the second and an even emphatic 21-13, 21-12 triumph in the last regu.

After copping a twin kill in the men’s and women’s hoop event back in the opener, the Philippines bled for the bronze mint this time together with Vietnam.

The hosts will try to bounce back in the next men’s team regu event against Malaysia while Myanmar and Indonesia tussle it out against each other in the start of the team regu events starting today.
