Benilde chessers stay on top in NCAA

Defending seniors' champion College of Saint Benilde beat Letran, 3.5-.5, to remain on top of the standings Monday in the 95th NCAA chess tournament at the San Beda campus.

The Blazers won all of their three ties over the long weekend to improve their six-round total to 19.5 points.  

San Beda scored a 4-0 romp of Arellano University to collect 16.5 points in second place and keep within reach of St. Benilde.

University of Perpetual Help System Dalta moved up to the third place with 13 points after beating Lyceum of the Philippines University, 2.5-1.5.

Jose Rizal University came through with a 2.5-1.5 decision over Mapua in the other men's tie.

The back-to-back title-seeking Junior Altas, meanwhile, were held to a 2-2 stalemate with the Junior Pirates. 

Perpetual Help remained in the lead despite the draw with 20 points.

San Beda defeated Arellano, 4-0, to seize second with 19 points. The Braves dropped to the third spot with 18 points.
