Benilde, SBU chessers play to 2-2 draw

College of Saint Benilde battled to a 2-2 standoff with San Beda University Wednesday in the 95th NCAA seniors’ chess tournament Wednesday.

Letran, for its part, remains within striking distance of the defending champion following a 4-0 romp of Jose Rizal University.

Despite the third-round draw, the Blazers still have the hold on the top spot with nine points, half-a-point ahead of the second-running Knights.

In other results at the San Beda campus, Lyceum of the Philippines University nipped Emilio Aguinaldo College, 2.5-1.5, while Arellano University edged Mapua, 2.5-1.5.  

The Pirates and the Chiefs are in joint third with 5.5 points.

In juniors’ play, San Beda overwhelmed CSB-LSGH to raise its league-best total to 11.5 points, Arellano routed Mapua, 3.5-.5, while titleholder University of Perpetual Help System Dalta blanked San Sebastian, 4-0.

The Braves are running second with 11 points, just half-a-point behind the Junior Red Woodpushers. The Junior Altas sit in third place with 10.5 points.

LPU scored a 3-1 victory over EAC while Letran nosed out JRU, 2.5-1.5.
