Del Rosario launches new football tourney

Anton Del Rosario, former member of the Azkals national football team and former Kaya Football Club team captain, brings a more exciting brand of football with the holding of the Philam Life 7s Football Tournament.

Played at less than half the pitch using smaller goals, with seven players each instead of the full 11 per team in a regular football match, 7-a-side is a faster-paced, more exciting game.

“Filipinos watch basketball because it is more exciting than watching football. Unless you are a football fan then you will find it (football) boring,” said Del Rosario during the launch of the football tournament last weekend at the Belle And Dragon in Makati.

“Where 11-a-side it’s played for 90 minutes and you get an average of two goals a game. In 7-a-side we go for 15 minutes (per half) and we have an average of five to six goals in every game,” said Del Rosario.

“And then another benefit is that an 11-a-side game can end in ties. In 7-a-side there’s no such thing as a tie. There will always be an end result for a winner. And then we do a playoff format. We do have a champion.”

Games will be held at McKinley Hill Stadium. Admission is free. Gates are open for anyone to watch. Spectators are not limited to the stands. They can approach the sidelines and see the action up close.

The tourney gives veteran football players a place to pursue their passion, encourage others to play and ultimately show Filipinos football can be more exciting.

Del Rosario said Filipinos like basketball so much because there is a lot more action. Football is hard to get into because it is more about tactics and execution rather than back and forth action. Most Filipinos find it boring.

Seven-a-side games are shorter. There is a smaller field. A lot more shooting and a lot more goals. Filipinos will love it according to Del Rosario.
