Dumaan, Loon give PH its first pencak medals

Jakarta—Filipino fighters Dines Dumaan and Jefferson Rhey Loon lost their men’s singles tanding semifinal matches Sunday, but the overall effort was still good enough for two bronzes, the Philippines’ first medals in the sport’s history in the Asian Games at the Padepokan Pencak Silat TM III Hall here Sunday.

Loon failed to make it to the championship round of the men’s 60-65 kgs category as he bowed to Ngoc Toan Nguyen of Vietnam, 0-5, while Dumaan suffered the same fate in his 55-kg class duel with Muhammad Faizul M Nasir of Malaysia, 0-5.

Loon lost on all scores of the five juries, 8-12-12-6-10, compared to Nguyen, who posted  22-26-20-17-21.

Dines had 14-9-8-11-15 in three rounds of sparring, while Nasir scored of 17-16-13-14 and 18.

Meanwhile, Cherry May Regalado will shoot for the gold medal today (Monday) as she competes in the medal round of pencak silat’s form event, also at the Pencak Silat TM III Hall. 

Regalado finished in joint second with Vietnam’s Vuong Thi Binh on scores of 447 in Group A of the women’s single preliminary round.

Vilaysack Tunee of Laos topped the round with 455 points, while Malaysia’s Ratius Norshahirah was fourth with 440.
