So stays at 2nd in Norway chessfest

Wesley So played Shakriyar Mamedyarov to a draw in 26 moves Tuesday in the seventh round of the Altibox Norway Chess tournament.

The draw was So’s fifth against a win, allowing him to keep his share of second spot with world no.1 Magnus Carlsen, whom he upset in the sixth, and two others.

Carlsen, who fell in 26 moves of the Slav Variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined to So, drew a bye.

So used the Closed variation of the Catalan Opening in his game with Mamedyarov.

Solo leader Viswanathan Anand finally scored a victory when he got past Frenchman Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in 40 moves of a Ruy Lopez Opening.

Hikaru Nakamura gained a share second spot following his draw with Fabiano Caruana in 30 moves of an English Opening.

And so did Levon Aronian after he drew with Sergey Karjakin in 39 moves of a Queen’s Gambit Declined.
