HOW the Philippines is crafting its grassroots sports program will be presented in a ministerial conference for sports to be held in Kazan, Russia next week.

As a model for development for many countries, Philippine Sports Institute and national training director Marc Edward Velasco has been tasked by Philippine Sports Commission Chairman William “Butch” Ramirez to represent the country in the meeting.

Velasco got his marching orders from Ramirez last Thursday following a meeting with Caroline Baxter Tresise, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Consultant on Youth and Sport Social and Human Sciences.

Baxter-Tresise met with Ramirez to discuss the level of involvement that UNESCO will have with the PSC and its programs.

She said the Philippines has formed a comprehensive sports policy that should be an example for many member states of the United Nations to follow.

The Philippines’ policy in sports, according to Baxter-Tresise is in the same mindset as that of the Kazan Action Plan, which leaders of many countries will include in their talks during the meeting in Russia, also known as MINEPS VI.

“It’s really an opportunity to have a look into the Philippines’ sports policies, and to realign some of it with the Kazan Action Plan,” she explained.
