Puerto Princesa hosts FIM Asian Motocross tourney

SPORTS Tourism Capital Puerto Princesa City hosts Rounds 3 and 4 of the FIM Asian Motocross Championship Series on June 9 to 11.

The annual event, also dubbed “Mayor Luis Marcaida III Cup,” will be be staged at the city’s world-class motocross race track and is organized by the National Motorcycle Sports and Safety Association (NAMSSA), the national sporting authority for motorcycle sports in the Philippines. 

Also held in collaboration with the City of Puerto Princesa, Asia Brewery, Shakeys, Summit Water, FoilaFly, Globe Telecom and Cobra Energy drink, the event is expected to draw an estimated 60,000 spectators.

National motocross champions from Japan, Indonesia, Guam, Singapore, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand , USA and the Philippines are joining the race for the bragging rights for motocross supremacy in the Asian continent. Asian Categories are Asian Veterans, Asian Junior MX85 and Asian MX2.

Philippine National Motocross Rider of the Year Kenneth San Andres, who finished fifth place overall in Rounds 1 and 2 in Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia last March 24 and 25, heads the Philippine contingent of young local athletes competing in the premier Asian MX2 class, as well as the other races in the Round 3 of the NAMSSA Philippine National Motocross Championship.

David Xander Viterbo of Taytay, Rizal, who placed second place overall in Malaysia, will also be seeing action in the Asian Junior MX85 class.

Guam will be represented again by Sean Lipanovich, who won Rounds 1 and 2, while Thailand will be represented by the 2016 FIM Asian Motocross Championship overall winner, Chaiyan Romphan who placed second overall in Malaysia and will try to regain his lead over his rival Sean Lipanovich.

Riders from various parts of the country are also expected to join the event for their quest for individual supremacy and the trophies with cash prizes up for grabs.

NAMSSA President Stephan “Macky Carapiet, in his capacity as the FIM Asia Safety officer, will be overseeing the event together with the International Jury President Pie An Tan of Indonesia.
