Long break from PBA benefits Newsome

The long break because of the COVID-19 has been a tremendous burden for almost everybody but may prove to be a blessing in disguise for Meralco Bolts guard Chris Newsome.

Newsome is using the time to good use by resting and recovering from aches, pains and minor injuries suffered through years of tough competition in the Philippine Basketball Association.

“I just try to get to know my body and uses this time to recover and make sure that I can function properly and heal some of those injuries that I had,” said Newsome in a published report.

“Those aches and pains and find out the root problem of that and take the therapy approach to this.”

The Bolts had an extended third conference last year after advancing to the Finals of the 2019 PBA Governors’ Cup against eventual champion Barangay Ginebra.

Newsome also had to face the added burden of practicing and playing for the Gilas men’s 3X3 basketball team that won the gold in last year’s Southeast Asian Games held here in the Philippines.

Newsome is staying in shape by keeping in constant touch with his teammates as they work out together through the Internet.

At the moment his biggest concern is watching his diet so that he doesn’t gain unwanted pounds because of the restrictions imposed by quarantine meant to limit the spread of COVID-19.

“I’m just trying to watch what I eat so I don’t gain too much weight. I just try to get in shape the best way I can,” said Newsome.

The Meralco guard joined the PBA when he was selected fourth overall in the 2015 PBA Draft by the Bolts. He had an outstanding season to eventually win the Rookie of the Year award.

He says he is looking forward to the resumption of the PBA season which he hopes will be soon
