Mike and Matt made 18 and 15 points respectively, to power the Blue Eagles to their second straight win in the 82nd University Athletic Association of the Philippines men’s basketball tournament.

Gian Mamuyac added 14 points for the Blue Eagles, who joined the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers in the early lead.

Meanwhile, Wendell Comboy and LJ Gonzales, considered as Far Eastern University Tamaraws’ 1-2 punch, delivered the goods as they demolished the University of the East Warriors, 81-65.

Comboy and Gonzales, the new two-guard combination of the Tams, scored double digit output in leading the FEU to their first win in two games

The 6’0” Comboy drilled a career-high 21 points while Gonzales added 14 for the Tams, who bounced back from a 55-61 loss to the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons in their opening game.

“It’s always good to get your first win of the season, especially coming from an opening day loss to UP. At least, nakaisa na kami,” said FEU coach Olsen Racela.

Knocking in six of nine triples, Comboy’s three-point artistry helped the Tams in a big way in the third period.

The Warriors, led by Senegalese cager Alex Diakhite with 21 points, came within range of the Tams off Rey Suerte’s triple from the right side, 44-49, with 2:41 left.

That’s when Comboy’s back-to-back triples found their mark, and hiked the FEU lead, 55-45, with 1:55 to go.

Earlier, a pair of driving layups from Gonzales in the last 7:30 of the third allowed FEU to enjoy a 13-point spread, 40-27.

Cameroonian Pat Chuente drilled in nine points for the Tams, who now share the same 1-1 win-loss record with the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons and the Adamson Falcons.

Chabi Yo had 18 points when University of Santo Tomas claimed win no. 2 for the solo lead at the expense of the Fighting Maroons.

Lenda Douanga had 26 points for the Falcons when they prevailed over the National University Bulldogs, 84-63.
