The NU-Nazareth School Bullpups recorded a rare back-to-back championship feat after defeating home team Indonesia at the gold-medal round of the 2019 ASEAN School Games held in GOR Sahabat in Semarang, Indonesia last July 23. The team registered a dominant 100-51 rout in the finals after also torching the same team three days ago in the elimination round, 87-47.
Terrence Fortea led the way for the Bullpups after an effective 11-of-18 shooting from the field tallying a total of 32 points in just 23 minutes of action. Gerry Abadiano chalked in 11 markers while Ernest Felicilda wound up 13 markers and dished out seven assists.
The UAAP juniors’ champions competed against some of the best young gunners in the Southeast Asian countries including teams from Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and host country Indonesia.
Meanwhile, nine members from the NU volleyball girls team also introduced themselves in the big stage after settling for silver in the same tournament. The Philippine team led by NU girls’ team Coach Regine Diego faced powerhouse Thailand in the final round showing a gallant effort and pushing the game into a thrilling five-set match, 20-25, 29-31, 25-19, 25-18, 9-15.
This is the highest finish of the Philippine volleyball girls’ team since the beginning of the ASEAN School Games in 2008.
National U squads are looking forward to another strong campaign next year as the Philippines is set to host the annual tournament in Dumaguete City.
