Arellano University sophomore player Archie Concepcion, the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Most Improved Player awardee, is just like many young basketball players, who dream of eventually playing in the Philippine Basketball Association.
The difference is that Concepcion’s basketball dreams stem from his wish to take care of his four younger siblings and his single mother, following the death of his father five years ago, leaving him the unenviable role of being a young father to the family.
“Gusto ko po talaga matulungan mga kapatid ko at mother ko. I share with them whatever I earn from basketball, that is why I also play in outside tournaments during the offseason. Right now, I have been sounded out by the Pampanga Lanterns in the MPBL and also by Trinity for its D-League team, big help sa amin ito,” explained the 6’1” player.
Concepcion, 22, emerged as MIP awardee when his ranking jumped from 94th place to 52nd place in the league.
He got more playing time this season and responded with a double-digit scoring contribution, showing his potential and earning his coach Jerry Codinera’s confidence.
Even incoming Arellano University coach Cholo Martin believes this young player will play a big role in the school’s title campaign next year.
“He has very good fundamentals and works hard during practice and actual games, good attitude, too,” said Martin.
He also wants to play for the national team in the future before going to the PBA, but his bigger dream is to finish his Business Administration course.
“Mas importante sa akin ‘yung makatapos, mas maraming options for work in the future,” said Concepcion.
At the rate this young player is improving on his game, a PBA career in the future in indeed a big possibility.
