Veteran guard Evan Nelle’s steady hands in the extra period lifted the San Beda Red Cubs to an 85-78 stopping for the San Sebastian Staglets.

Nelle made eight of his 14 point tally in overtime, and this carried the Red Cubs to their seventh triumph in 12 games in 93rd National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) junior’s basketball tournament late Friday evening at the Arena in San Juan.

“Maganda ang tira sa ko sa warmup. Feeling ko, nag-carryover ito sa game,” said Nelle after the Red Cubs climbed up to third place in the team standings.

The Staglets, with Neil Villapando and Alex Desoyo making 15 and 14 points, stayed in the thick of the fight in the extra five minutes.

Desoyo, who proved almost unstoppable with Ronnie Calahat with their penetrations all evening, drove past Nelle and Josh Tagala in the last 1:40, to keep the Staglets within range, 78-80.

Nelle then put the Red Cubs when he drove past Villapando in the remaining 54.5 seconds, 82-78.

They secured the win with 15.1 ticks when Tagala then connected with a trey.

“Kaya namin ipanalo ito sa regulation. Pero, hindi lang namin ma-contain sina Calahat at Desoyo. Ang galing mag penetrate,” said Red Cubs coach JB Sison.

Desoyo banged in 14 points for the Staglets, including a drive past Sam Abu Hijle in the last 6.5 seconds, tying the match, 75-all in regulation.

Prince Etrata also had 14 points while Tagala drilled in 13 for the Red Rubs, who struggled in the last two minutes after they lost big man Peter Alfaro to five fouls.
