SAN BEDA Red Cubs’ playmaker Anferry Zachary Estacio led his team’s last-quarter blitz to power his team past the Mapua Red Robins, 78-64, in their one-game championship match of the 2017 adidas Uprising basketball tournament held recently at the BGC Titan Love Court in Taguig City.

With the Cubs trailing double digits at the end of third quarter, the 14-year-old 5’10” shooting guard Estacio ignited the San Beda uprising with his timely three-pointers and steals to obliterate the Red Robbins’ lead en route to his team’s come-from-behind victory in the tournament participated in by top teams from Universities Athletic Association of the Philippines and National Collegiate Athletic Association, such as La Salle, National University, University of Santo Tomas, Lyceum, Jose Rizal University and San Beda, among others, plus a powerhouse team from Chinese school league Chang Kai Shek College.

Estacio, son of former Red Cub and UST Tiger slotman Herby Joy Estacio, won the Most Valuable Player trophy and became a member of the Mythical Five in the league presented by adidas.

SBC Red Cubs’ playmaker Anferry Zachary Estacio holds his MVP trophy.

Estacio’s playmaking consistency and all-around prowess keyed the Cubs’ wins against UST and Arellano in the preliminaries. He also led his team past dangerous NU, led by last years’ adidas Uprising top player Gerry Abadiano in the semifinals, before steering the Cubs past Mapua in the final match.

“It’s a tall order playing against the best junior collegiate teams. I Thank God I converted my shots and had crucial steals that eventually made the difference,” said Estacio, who acknowledged his coach Manu Inigo and his father Herby Joy in molding his basketball skills.
