Close to 600 triathletes kicked off the 2020 Triathlon season by competing in the National Age Group Triathlon Series Leg 1 held on Sunday at San Bernardino, Subic Bay Freeport.

This annual event is organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines, in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority Tourism Department. Other NAGT Subic 2020 supporters include Pocari Sweat, Asian Centre for Insulation Philippines Inc., FINIS, Acea, Standard Insurance, StratMed and PLDT Home.

The NAGT series is TRAP’s premier grassroots recruitment and development platform.

Young triathletes were also scouted and pooled for training to compete in the 2022 Youth Olympic Games.

Go for Gold Cebu ruled the Boys’ Super Sprint Distance event with Matthew Justin Hermosa and Jacob Kennedy Lipunan taking first and third place, respectively. Dash Aron Ramirez of Sta. Cruz, Laguna finished with a silver medal.

On the Girls’ side, last year’s winner Lady Samantha Jhunace Corpuz successfully retained her gold medal.

The Palarong Pambansa 400m freestyle swimming record holder clocked in at 37 minutes and 45 seconds. Silver medalist Kira Ellis of Team Fitness First displayed vast improvement from her seventh-place performance in 2019.

Jeanna Mariel Canete of Cebu finished in third place, less than two minutes after Ellis.

The winning athletes from the 13-15 age group are highly-anticipated to be the future stars of triathlon and shall likely comprise the nucleus of our country’s 2022 YOG team, should they qualify.

This year’s Subic race also served as a preparatory event for the ASTC, Asian Championships, Asian Beach Games, and ASEAN Para Games.
