Filipino runners make mark in Florence

The 40th Florence Marathon became a showcase of talent and determination for Filipino runners who delivered impressive performances amidst the stunning backdrop of Florence, Italy.

The marathon, known for its scenic route passing iconic landmarks such as the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and the Lungarno, drew 11,000 runners from 90 nations, making it a unique celebration of endurance and culture.

Lorenzo Castro Jr. stood out as he secured 3rd place in his age group for the Philippines and an incredible 18th overall, clocking in at 2 hours, 31 minutes, and 16 seconds. This performance reinforces his capability to represent the country on an international stage.

“Dito sa Firenze Marathon, the race hasn’t all been smooth, after 16 kilometers nakaramdam ako ng konti hirap pero ok naman resulta,”said Castro.

His outstanding performance capped an impressive streak of achievements in recent months, including podium finishes at the Mugello Marathon, Mezza di Signa, Trofeo di Panche, and 30 N’ Piena.

Other Filipino runners also delivered inspiring results. Mark Robin Salas clocked an impressive 3:00:36, while Genesis Cunanan finished in 3:07:42, following his sixth-place finish at the 100Km delle Alpi in Turin in October.

First-time marathoner Regie Palmonares completed the course in 4:58:49, sharing that his running journey began just eight months ago as a fitness goal and has since become a passion, with training sessions squeezed in after work.

The Filipino running community in Florence, including members of PURI ASD and Pinoy Runners Firenze led by Don-Don Castro, brought a spirit of camaraderie and joy to the event.

Ultrarunner Mark Lou Lee, who ranked seventh overall in the grueling 214-kilometer Laguna Loop in July, took a more relaxed approach this time, aiming to enjoy the experience with fellow runners.

For seasoned athletes and first-time marathoners alike, the Florence Marathon was not just a race but a celebration of commitment and resilience.

The iconic landmarks, the electric atmosphere, and the shared triumph of crossing the finish line made the event unforgettable. Filipino runners carried the pride of their nation, proving that their dedication to the sport can shine on any stage.

At the elite level, Kenyan runners dominated the podium, with Samuel Kiplimo Naibei finishing first in 2 hours, 12 minutes, and 51 seconds, and Dorine Jerop Murkomen claiming victory in the women’s category with a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes, and 1 second.
