Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia—Filipino trackster and Calabarzon’s sprint queen Jessel Lumapas claimed her second gold medal and the country’s fifth overall in the ongoing 2018 ASEAN School Games late Monday afternoon at the Mini-Stadium in Bukit Jalil here.
Lumapas, a Grade 11 standout of Nazareth School of National University, clocked 25.03 seconds in the girls’ 200m.
Her teammate Decerie Jane Niala claimed the silver (25.07) and Indonesia’s Nuryanti Erna (25.25) took bronze.
The 17-year-old Lumapas, who hails from Dasmarinas City, Cavite, said her gold medal quest is far from over as she is still aiming for another one in the 4x400m event scheduled Tuesday. She claimed her first gold in the girls’ 400m run with a time of 57.46 seconds.
“Tingnan ko lang po. Kakayanin namin ng teammates ko. May tiwala naman ako sa kanila (We’ll see. We will do our best. I believe in my teammates,” Lumapas said at the sidelines of the athletics’ awarding ceremony.
Competing in her last ASEAN School Games, the Fernando Dagasdas-mentored bet said she dedicates her medal to her parents.
Meanwhile, tracksters Tara O. Borlain and Bernalyn Bejoy also salvaged runners-up medals in 800m girls’ event.
Vietnam’s Ngo Thi Khanh Ny emerged with the gold medal after she timed two minutes and 13.90 seconds.
Borlain’s 2:15.54 and Bejoy’s 2:17.51 secured them the silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Over at the Gymnastics Gymnasium still in Bukit Jalil, Justine Ace de Leon scored the silver medal in the boys’ artistic gymnastics’ vault event.
De Leon received a final score of 13.533 points for the silver medal spot, placing behind the gold medalist Trinh Hai Khang from Vietnam, who garnered 13.717 points.
Althea Descutido also salvaged the bronze medal in the clubs’ event finals of the girls’ rhythmic gymnastics.
In the latest ASG medal tally, the Philippines ranked sixth with five gold, five silver, and 10 bronze medals.
Host country Malaysia has emerged on top with 23 gold, 24 silver, and 19 bronze medals followed by Indonesia (19-17-22), Thailand (12-16-19), Vietnam (12-7-6) and Singapore (6-8-10).
