Red Lions nail 14th triumph

ROBERT Bolick Jr. came up with another scintillating performance as defending champion San Beda College eased University of Perpetual Help out of contention yesterday at the Arena in San Juan.

The 6’1” guard, who averages 12.5 points, topscored for 15 points for the Red Lions, who picked up their 14th triumph in 15 games in the 93rd NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Bolick came up with his best game in the second period, knocking in eight points to lead the Red Lions out of an 11-all deadlock in the first canto.

Holding down the Altas to nine points, the Red Lions had little problems taking a 27-19 halftime edge.

Donald Tanokoua backed up Bolick with 14 points and nine boards, while AC Soberano drilled in 9.

“They (Altas) are a good defensive team. We really had a hard time so we’re happy we got this one,” said Red Lions coach Boyet Fernandez.

This is the second straight season that the Red Lions knocked the Altas out of running for the Final Four semifinals.

The Altas with Jeff Coronel, Keith Pido and Gab Dangangon hitting nine points each, now tote a 4-10 record. Peter Atencio

In junior action, the San Beda Red Cubs drew double digits from Evan Nelle and three others as they routed the Junior Altas, 87-66.

The Red Cubs remained in contention for a twice-to-beat incentive in the Final Four, staying behind second-placing La Salle Greenhills(10-4) with their 10-5 card.

Nelle banged in 16 points, while Peter Alfaro and Luke Sese added 12, and Germy Mahinay hit 11.
