Miado, Torres chase dreams in Myanmar

DREAMS will come true in Yangon, Myanmar as Jeremy “The Jaguar” Miado and Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres lead a group of Filipino mixed martial artists who are seeking to stamp their class in the combat game when they fly there tomorrow, Monday to fight in the blockbuster event ONE: Hero’s Dream.

ONE Middleweight World Champion “Burmese Python” Aung La N Sang, a sports icon in Myanmar, faces the biggest challenge of his career against hulking Alain Ngalani in a non-title open weight bout at ONE: Hero’s Dream on Friday Nov. 3, 2017 at the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium.

Miado battles Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit of Thailand while Torres enters the cage against Nita Dea of Indonesia in the undercards. Burn Soriano, who faces Chen Lei of China and Eugene Toquero who meets Ma Hao Bin also of China, are the other Filipinos who will see action in Myanmar.

Miado pursues his dream of following in the footsteps of Filipino icon Manny Pacquiao who blazed the trail for other aspiring fighters to follow.

“I want to compete because this is my passion. Manny Pacquiao is a superstar in boxing. Everybody knows him. My plan is to do my best to have a name like his in ONE Championship,” said Miado.

Meanwhile, Torres hopes to follow up her spectacular victory over rising ONE Championship star Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige when they fought at ONE: Kings & Conquerors in Macau, China.

“This is my chance to establish my first winning streak in ONE Championship. It’s not impossible. That’s why I am exerting a tremendous amount of effort in training. I want to keep on winning,” Torres said.

The 21-year-old native of Zamboanga del Norte hopes to extend her success during the three-round encounter against the Indonesian kickboxer.

Soriano, who hoped to follow up his spectacular 15-second demolition of Satya Wirawan August 2016 but instead lost to Saiful Merican in the first round, will try to bounce back.

“I believe that I could have done better in that match with Saiful Merican. I was prepared to go the full three rounds, but I came up short. I just realized that there was something missing,” Soriano said.

The loss to Merican convinced Soriano to turn to renowned fight trainer George Castro for help.

“Right now, I have a tremendous support system in my training, especially with the help of my coach George Castro. He knows how to bring out the best in me. With him in my corner, it is always exciting to prepare for a bout,” Soriano said.

Castro says Soriano has the potential to become a very good if not a great fighter.

“These last few weeks we’ve been preparing mentally because fighting is 80 percent mental. People think it’s a lot physical. I keep telling him in there that it’s not just hit each other back and forth. It’s also about a game plan. He’s never had a game plan before. He’s never been coached before. Hopefully it all comes together this fight,” said Castro.

Miado wants to get back on the winning track. But he faces an enormous challenge against the undefeated Thai prospect. The three-round bout against Mitsatit is critical for Miado who lost a split decision to Robin Catalan in his ONE Championship debut this past April. The loss snapped a six-fight MMA winning streak for Miado.

“I am happy that ONE Championship has given me the opportunity to showcase my talent on a global scale. My goal is to be a world champion. This is the first step in my road back to the winner’s circle. Soon, people will know who I am,” Miado said.

“This is my big opportunity to show people my capabilities as a martial artist. I am very proud and blessed that they are giving me this chance again. For now, I will do my best and train hard.”
