Gilas caps Jordan tilt with 3rd straight loss

Carl Tamayo and SJ Belangel finished with double-digit outputs for Gilas Pilipinas which finished its King Abdullah Cup campaign on Monday evening with three straight losses in Jordan.

Tunisia went on to claim the bronze medal with an 80-68 win over Gilas.

Tamayo sank 14 points while Belangel added 12 for Gilas, which settled for fourth place with a 2-4 record.

Tunisia moved ahead from a three-point advantage following Omar Abada’s free throws, which touched off an 11-2 finishing kick.

Abada led Tunisia with 22 points while Jawher Jawadi added 19 markers and 6 assists.

Gilas began with a 7-0 start for a 14-8 lead midway through the first quarter.

Tunisia then took control of the game with a 26- blast in the 5:49 mark in the second period for a 34-20 lead.

Earlier, Angelo Kouame fired 20 points for Gilas Pilipinas as it bowed to Jordan, 84-74.

The King’s Cup is the last tournament for Gilas, which is getting ready for the FIBA Asia Cup, which was rescheduled  for next year, along with the 31st Southeast Asian Games.

Coach Tab Baldwin is hopeful that the November window of the FIBA World Cup Qualifiers pushes through.
