Kai Sotto gave himself a fitting birthday present.

Sotto makes next step in goal to play in NBA
Kai Sotto

The 18-year-old Filipino signed a deal with the NBA G League after celebrating his 18th birthday.

Sotto's decision came a month after 6'5" Fil-American Jalen Green signed a contract for the 2020–21 season of the NBA G League.

Their decisions will have them bypassing a chance to play college basketball in the United States.

While Green is expected to be a lottery pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, Sotto, on the other hand, will try to be noticed by scouts and hopefully, be selected in the same class.

Sotto's move was confirmed in a twitter message from Shams Charania of The Athletic

Last year, Sotto spent half of the year staying fit in an effort to try out for several college teams in the United States and with college coach John Calipari of the University of Lexington keeping an eye on him.

That plan has since changed with his entry into the G League.

This makes Sotto the first international prospect to join the program of the NBA G League.

Reports said efforts to have Sotto sign with the G League has been in the works for over a month.

The G League is seeking to have one more international player to sign up as well in the near future.

Sotto was said to have been recommended by Green, according to reports.

And it was the Fil-American from Merced, California, who hand-picked the 7'2" ex-Ateneo Blue Eaglet to join him in the roster.

They are now joined by two other five-star prospects, Daishen Nix and Isaiah Todd.

They are to be in a team that is expected to play roughly 15 exhibition games.

Five of their games will be against G League competition, while five others will be against various international National Basketball Association academies.

There will be another set of five games against teams that will be announced at a later date.
