In the quiet dawn of January 1, 2026, the world lost a man whose life was never about himself, but about the people he lifted.
Prof. Robert Milton De Asis Calo, a teacher, a sports leader, and a comrade, departed from Macau, leaving behind not only memories but a living legacy woven into the fabric of Philippine sport and education.
His ashes returned home on January 28, carried back to Manila with dignity. On January 31, surrounded by his beloved wife Myrna, his daughter Michelle, his son Ritchie, and loyal followers and friends, he was laid to rest at the Manila Memorial Park in Sucat, Parañaque City, Metro Manila. The interment was not a farewell—it was a celebration of a life that had given so much, a gracious ending befitting a man who lived with honor.
For more than three decades, Calo stood as the alter ego of this writer, a steadfast comrade through time. Together, we endured long struggles, built the Federation of School Sports Association of the Philippines (FESSAP) from its fragile beginnings in 1998–1999, and gave student-athletes a voice and a future—especially within the State Universities and Colleges (SUC). Where others saw obstacles, Calo recognized opportunities. Where others faltered, we stood firm. His wisdom was quiet yet unyielding, his loyalty unwavering, and his vision always clear.
Calo’s greatness was not measured in titles or accolades, but in the countless lives he touched. He was a mentor who believed in the power of youth, a strategist who understood the value of perseverance, and a friend who never abandoned the fight. His presence was a steady flame in the storm, guiding his comrades through battles that seemed insurmountable.
He was a brother in spirit. In moments of doubt, Calo’s calm strength reminded us that the mission was larger than ourselves. In victories, he celebrated not for personal glory, but for the athletes and communities whose dreams had been made possible. His life was a testament to the truth that service, when given selflessly, becomes immortal. With Calo’s hope as my guiding light, this writer believes that someday we will build a FESSAP stadium—a home where our efforts, success stories, and treasured memorabilia will be preserved, a living monument to the legacy we forged together.
I am deeply grateful to my constituents—Gerry Sergio, Cecille Sarmiento, and Allan Soria—who represented the Federation in maintaining contact with the Calo family until the peaceful end. I am likewise thankful to the FESSAP Board officers, led by Edwin C. Fabro, Alvin Tai Lian, David Ong, Christian Tan, Atty. Maria Luz Arzaga Mendoza, Dr. Jesus Rodrigo Torres, Baldomero Estenzo, and Felix Tiukinhoy, for extending their heartfelt condolences to Prof. Calo’s family.
Now, as he rests, his story does not end. It continues in the federation he helped build, in the athletes who wear their jerseys with pride, in the families who found hope through sport, and in the comrades who carry his memory forward. His legacy is not a monument of stone, but a living spirit of resilience, unity, and service.
Prof. Robert Milton Calo’s last chapter is written not in sorrow, but in peace. He has returned home, embraced by his family, honored by his comrades, and remembered by a nation. His journey reminds us that true greatness lies in service, and that even in passing, he remains a guiding light.
