POC board maps out packed ‘26 as Tolentino seeks Asiad buildup

THE Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) executive board met on Monday to map out a busy calendar of international competitions for Team Philippines, with president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino saying the year ahead will be critical in preparing both elite and youth athletes for future multi-sport events.

Tolentino said the packed schedule is designed to lay the groundwork for the country’s campaign in the Nagoya Asian Games, using major international tournaments as stepping stones for long-term success.

“The events lined up this year are all important; it is a combination of tournaments for present and youth athletes,” Tolentino said. “We have to make sure that while we support our current national athletes, we are also giving opportunities to the youth who will eventually take over.”

He described the program as a balance between immediate international exposure for seasoned competitors and developmental opportunities for young prospects, aimed at building continuity across generations.

The Philippines is set to take part in a range of competitions, including the Winter Olympic Games, the Summer Youth Olympic Games and three major continental events.

Tolentino said participation is not solely focused on medal hauls but on gaining experience, strengthening depth and raising athletes to international standards.

Several national sports associations are also preparing to host international events, including the WTA Philippine Open this month and an Asian Golf Tour tournament in February, as part of broader efforts to raise competition levels at home.

Tolentino said exposure to high-level competition is vital for young athletes to develop confidence early, while elite athletes will use the events to sharpen their skills and assess readiness ahead of larger meets.

The board also discussed closer coordination with national sports associations to ensure athletes receive adequate support in training, logistics, and scheduling.

Tolentino reiterated the POC’s commitment to working with stakeholders to build a sustainable pipeline of talent capable of competing consistently on the international stage.
