With the countdown to the Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games well underway, Filipino-Italian alpine skier Francis Ceccarelli is poised to make history as he prepares to represent the Philippines on the sport’s grandest winter stage.
Just a month before the Olympic flame began its symbolic journey from Olympia, Greece, in November last year, anticipation has been steadily building toward the Opening Ceremony at Milan’s iconic San Siro Stadium on February 6, 2026.
“It’s a great honor and privilege to represent my country, the Philippines! My first home, a place where I grew up., really proud to bring our flag to the Olympic Games.”
“It really brings me immense joy and pride to embody this nation,” Ceccarelli said in an online interview.
At just 22 years old, Ceccarelli has officially qualified for the 2026 Winter Olympics, becoming the first Filipino athlete to secure a quota spot for Milano–Cortina and marking a landmark moment for Philippine winter sports. Born in Quezon City, Philippines, Ceccarelli was adopted by Italian parents and moved to Italy at the age of eight. He was raised in Abetone, Tuscany, a town steeped in alpine skiing tradition, where he developed his passion and talent for the sport. Surrounded by snow-covered slopes and a culture deeply rooted in skiing, Ceccarelli honed his skills and steadily climbed the competitive ranks.
Ceccarelli continues to fine-tune his form ahead of the Olympic season. Since beginning to represent the Philippines in 2023, he has embraced the responsibility of carrying the national colors, not only as a competitor but also as a trailblazer. As an Olympic Solidarity athlete, he now stands as the first Filipino to earn a confirmed quota spot for the Milano–Cortina Games and is set to become only the fifth Olympic alpine skier in Philippine history.
Ceccarelli’s qualification is more than a personal triumph—it signals a growing presence of the Philippines in winter sports, a field traditionally dominated by snow-rich nations. His journey bridges continents and cultures, embodying perseverance, identity, and pride.
As the Olympic flame makes its way toward Milan, Ceccarelli’s historic achievement sets the tone for other Filipino athletes still chasing their Olympic dreams, proving that with determination and opportunity, even the most unlikely paths can lead to the world’s biggest stage.
