Rising star Hokett de los Santos earned a coveted wildcard slot to the international event of the Atletang Ayala World Pole Vault Challenge, set today (Sunday) at the Ayala Triangle Gardens in Makati.
The 22-year-old de los Santos, a standout varsity athlete from the University of Santo Tomas, clinched the spot after topping the National Pole Vault Competition on Saturday at the same venue. He cleared the qualifying mark of 5.00 meters on his second attempt, sealing his entry to the world-class showdown.
Although he fell short in his bid to surpass 5.20 meters, de los Santos remains thrilled at the opportunity to test his skills against some of the world’s elite vaulters.
“I’m glad but at the same time nervous because I’m just a five-meter jumper, then I’ll go up against those who are close to six meters. What will happen to me tomorrow?” de los Santos said in jest, flashing a mix of excitement and humility.
De los Santos outperformed national team veteran Janry Ubas and UST teammate Mejen Sombongan, who both settled for silver and bronze after clearing 4.45 meters.
The women’s division also delivered standout performances, with Fil-American Alyana Nicolas striking gold after clearing 3.80 meters. She edged out Amy Christensen, who secured silver with 3.70 meters, while Jia Kawachi and Jessa Marie Libres shared bronze honors after matching 3.40 meters.
The international meet officially kicks off at 3 p.m., bringing together world-class pole vaulters—including Filipino ace EJ Obiena—for what promises to be a thrilling showcase of athletic excellence right in the heart of Makati.
