The Philippines’ Riza Pasuit advanced to the round of 16 of the 2025 World Boxing Championships after stopping Saudi Arabia’s Ragad Alnaimi in the women’s 60kg division on Monday.
The referee halted the bout in the second round, ruling Pasuit the winner by referee stoppage contest (RSC). She will face Brazil’s Rebeca Santos on Sept. 9 for a place in the quarter-finals.
In the men’s 60kg category, Junmilardo Ogayre exited the tournament after a unanimous 5-0 defeat to Kazakhstan’s Biibars Zhexen in the round of 32.
“Good performance for Ogayre,” Association of Boxing Alliances in the Philippines (ABAP) secretary-general Marcus Manalo said after the loss. “The bout was closer than the score suggests. He was landing punches vs the Kazakh.”
Meanwhile, Carlo Paalam, a silver medallist at the Tokyo Olympics, was eliminated from the World Boxing Championships after a 4-1 loss to Junior Alcantara Reyes of the Dominican Republic in the round of 32 of the men’s 55kg division late Sunday.
Paalam, a two-time Olympian from Cagayan de Oro, struggled early before recovering in the second round. He mounted a strong offensive in the third but failed to sway the judges.
The 26-year-old secured just one scorecard at 29-28, while the other four went against him, with two judges ruling 30-27 and two 29-28 in favour of Reyes.
