The San Miguel Beermen are one win away from the PBA Philippine Cup Finals, largely due to their understanding of Game 5’s immense significance, according to head coach Leo Austria. After securing a 103-92 victory over the Barangay Ginebra Gin Kings on Friday night, giving them a 3-2 series lead, Austria reflected on the pivotal moments and player contributions that fueled their success.
“The players knew the importance of this game because usually, those who win Game 5s have a big chance to get into the finals,” Austria stated, underscoring the team’s mental preparation. This understanding, he believes, will carry over to Game 6 on Sunday at the Big Dome. “This Game 6, the way I see it, we have a big chance to get into the finals. I think this could motivate the players.”
Austria admitted the Beermen faced an early challenge, enduring “one of the worst starts” with only 12 points in the first quarter. However, he credited the team’s ability to “regroup” and the impactful performances of his key players for turning the tide. He specifically lauded Jericho Cruz, whose season-high 27 points, including 12 in the third canto, were crucial in maintaining their lead. CJ Perez’s 32-point outing, particularly his 12 points in the final period that stretched an 88-86 edge to a comfortable 101-92, also drew praise.
“Their energy was truly infectious for their teammates,” Austria said, referring to the contributions that lifted the team. While acknowledging the challenge of closing out a resilient Ginebra squad, Austria’s message is clear: the Beermen will rely on their collective “energy and effort” and precise execution on both ends of the court to punch their ticket to the finals.
