Good luck to a dedicated sports leader: A tribute to Paulo Ferreira

IT is never easy to see a longtime friend and colleague depart from an organization they helped build.

Paulo Ferreira, a dedicated professional who served the International University Sports Federation (FISU) Secretariat for nearly two decades, is no longer with the federation—a development that came as a surprise to many of us who have worked alongside him.

For years, Paulo demonstrated an unwavering commitment to university sports, contributing significantly to FISU’s growth and influence on the global stage. Many of us believed he was destined to become the next FISU Secretary General following his predecessor’s retirement, yet his sudden departure leaves us wondering what transpired behind the scenes.

As his longtime friend, I shared moments of both agreement and disagreement with Paulo, particularly regarding our approach to hosting international events. Despite occasional professional differences, I always recognized and respected his dedication to developing FISU to the heights it has reached today.

His exit from FISU is undoubtedly difficult to accept, not only for him but for those of us who appreciated his vision and leadership. I sincerely hope he finds new, even more challenging opportunities that allow him to continue shaping the future of university sports. His contributions will not be forgotten, and I am confident his talent, experience, and determination will lead him to new successes.

In appreciation of the time we shared, I will be including some of our photos together, alongside close associates, as a tribute to the years of collaboration and camaraderie.

Wishing Paulo Ferreira all the best in his next journey.
