Eala marches to Mumbai Open Final 16

THE Philippines’ Alex Eala advanced to the second round of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA)-125 Mumbai Open Tennis Championship at the Cricket Club of India in Mumbai.

Seeking the top purse of $15,500, the 19-year-old Eala has marched to the next phase after taking an hour to get past Sara Saito of Japan, 6-1, 6-0.

Eala, whose, world ranking dropped to no. 135, is now in the Round of 16.

For now, she awaits the winner of the clash between Japanese netters Nao Hibino and Mai Hontama to find out who her next rival is.

Eala scored on 24 points out of the 31 first serves.

Second seed Rebecca Marino of Canada also advanced to the second round after disposing of Czech netter Sara Bejek, 6-0, 6-2.

Chia Yi Tsao has partnered with Eala in the doubles, which offers a top purse of $5,700 to the winners, to go with 125 points.

So far, Eala is ranked no. 193 in the WTA’s list of prize money leaders this week, having earned a total of $46,514 since the start of the year.

Eala, a two-time Asian Games’ bronze medalist, picked up $2,200 from the Singapore Open last week, where she turned back Saito, 6-1, 6-7, 7-5, in the first round.

After that, Eala fell to Simona Waltert of Switzerland, 3-6, 2-6.
