The University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors relied on the stellar defensive efforts of 6’2 middle blocker Riza Nogales in the final set to defeat the Lyceum Philippine University Pirates, 24-26, 25-21, 25-22, 25-14, on Friday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Nogales’ defensive heroics in the fourth set were key, propelling the Lady Warriors to an early lead alongside the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws at the start of the 2024 Shakey’s Super League Pre-Season Collegiate Volleyball Championships.

Nogales sparked a game-changing run with six consecutive points from her blocks, turning a tight 9-7 scoreline into a commanding 16-8 advantage, securing the Lady Warriors’ win in the 100-minute match.

“The girls did well in blocking and defending the net. I think we were able to stop their hitters,” said Lady Warriors head coach, Dr. Obet Vital, commending his team’s strong defensive stand.

Jelaica Gajero led UE with 20 points, including 10 in the first set, despite their narrow 24-26 loss in that frame. Meanwhile, Johna Dolorito paced the Lady Pirates with 10 points.

In an earlier match, Clarisse Loresco scored nine points to help the FEU Lady Tamaraws dominate the San Sebastian Lady Stags, 25-14, 25-15, 25-20. Alyssa Devosora and Kyle Pendon contributed seven points each in their 76-minute encounter, giving the Lady Tams a strong start in the tournament.
