Powell’s 50 points fuel Dragons past Painters

Import Myles Powell fired 50 points, including 11 triples to power the Bay Area Dragons to a 120-87 smothering of the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters on Friday in the Philippine Basketball Association Commissioner’s Cup at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Powell drilled in 20 points in the third period as the Dragons went on to post their seventh triumph in nine outings.

The last time an import scored this much three-pointers was in 2001 when Mobiline’s Jerod Ward did it in the 2001 Commissioners Cup, following their 93-87 triumph over Brgy Ginebra.

“I just give full credit to him. Myles did a tremendous job with it,” said coach Brian Goorjian.

Three treys from Powell came in the last 3:27 of the third, and during a 12-0 blast which lifted the Dragons from a 68-48 edge to an 80-51 spread.

The 33-point setback of the Elasto Painters is the fourth most lopsided game in the franchise’s history.

It was the second time that the 6’2” Powell tallied 50 points since their loss to the Meralco Bolts.

Powell keyed in 19 points in the second period as the Dragons moved away from a tight 28-27 edge and took a 15-point spread, 57-42, at halftime.

So far, Powell’s 11 triples equals the fourth all-time high by imports.

Powell went on to finish with 29 points after the first half, capping his scoring binge with a layup at the 1:22 mark.
