Filipino star Carlos Yulo won’t be competing in just one or two events in the coming World Championships in Liverpool.
The 22-year-old Yulo grabbed two more gold medals on the final night of 9th Senior Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships at the Aspire Dome in Doha, Qatar.
His show of confidence on the floor yielded Yulo first-place finishes in the vault and and the parallel bars in the men’s division, upping his total medal winnings to three golds and a silver and rewarding him five slots to the FIG Artistic World Championships in Liverpool from October 29 to November 6.
Yulo earlier took the gold in the floor exercises, a day after he settled for a silver medal in the men’s all-around. He placed fourth in the rings late Friday evening finals.
All the podium-finishers, including the fourth and fifth-placers, have made qualification to the world meet.
The 4’11” Yulo upstaged Hansol Kim of South Korea and Japan’s Shiga Tachibana for the gold with a combined execution and difficulty score of 14.884 points in the men’s vault, where he is the reigning world champion.
Later, Yulo finished with 15.167 points ahead of China’s Dehang Yin and Japan’s Tsuyoshi Hsaegawa in the parallel bar finals.
According to Yulo, competing in Doha proved to be a fortunate experience for him, since he won his first-ever world championship medal by claiming the bronze in the floor exercises in Qatar back in 2018.
“Doha is my favourite venue. I like this city, it’s the venue where I had won my maiden World Championships medal in 2018,” said Yulo in a statement.
Yulo, who is based in Tokyo Japan for training, has improved since then.
He went on to successfully defend his floor exercise crown in 2019. And after a yearlong layoff before of the pandemic, Yulo returned to the World Championships with the vault and the parallel bars golds in 2021.
Hasegawa scored 14.7 points in second place, while Yin tallied 14.7.
In the men’s horizontal bars, Jinseong Yun of Korea claimed the gold with 14.167, with Chaopan Lin of China taking the silver with 14.167 and Milad Karimi of Kazakhstan in third (14.133).
In the women’s balance beam, Wu Ran of China took the gold with 14.633 points, while Arisa Kasahara (Japan) placed second with 13.833, and Zhang Jin of China in third with 13.700
