Young guns resume PPS title chase in Tagum

Action in the PPS-PEPP national age-group tennis circuit shifts to Tagum, Davao del Norte beginning tomorrow (Tuesday, June 7) with close to 150 youngsters clashing for top honors and ranking points in the Governor’s Cup at the DavNor Tourism Sports Complex courts.

Top seed Andre Sing and recent Pigcawayan, Cotabato leg winner Vince Serna of Butuan headline the full-packed 32-player field in the boys’ 18-and-under division while James Aquino and Jayson Battad earning the top two seeding in the 16-U play which will also hold a qualifier to accommodate the big number of entries.

Chelsea Bernaldez and Juliana Carvajal, meanwhile, are the marked players in the girls’ premier class while Chloe Mercado and multi-titled Dhea Cua lead the chase in the 16-U side of the Group 2 tournament, part of the nationwide talent-search put up by Palawan Pawnshop president/CEO Bobby Castro.

Cua, who dominated the 14- and 16-U classes in the recent three-leg Cotabato swing in Kabacan, Kidapawan and Pigcawayan, also spearheads the 14-U field that includes Wendelyn Anino with Aquino and Battad likewise looming as the players to beat in their side of the event presented by Dunlop and backed by ProtekTODO, PalawanPay, the Unified Tennis Philippines and UTR (Universal Tennis Rating).

It will be a tossup between Paul Cabrera and David Lazaro in the boys’ 12-U category with Lexter Mondragon and Erwan Manuel plus a host of others out to foil their bid while Clausxie Flores and Teika Ello set out to dispute the girls’ trophy in the youngest age division of the five-day tournament.
