Black: Future is bright for Bolts

JUST a week removed from its heartbreaking defeat in the 2016 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup finals, Meralco still sees its last campaign as a big gain and not a setback.

Bolts’ coach Norman Black acknowledged the work and effort his team put in to be able to establish itself a legitimate contender for a championship in the league after years of disappointing results.

“I’m proud of the players and what we have done overall for the season,” said Black.

Looking ahead, Black knows the next season is just a month away and he wants his wards to keep the development and momentum going and carry them to their next journey.

“We lost, but I reminded the team that the next conference starts in a couple of weeks so we need to keep our head high and look forward to that as well,” added Black.

The veteran multi-titled coach is convinced that the future is bright for Meralco, especially after realizing its potential this past conference.

“The team has shown a lot of promise and improvement. We’re not finished yet,” he said.

Meralco skipper Jimmy Alapag still feels the sting of defeat but nonetheless, he couldn’t be more proud of what the Bolts just accomplished, making the finals for the first time in team history.

“It’s always tough to lose, but I’m still proud of my Meralco guys,” the former Most Valuable Player said.

Bolts import Allen Durham, the Best Import of the Conference, likewise expressed his agony over the defeat, but is thankful for the fruitful run he had with his squad. He also looks forward to another stint with Meralco.

“Losing the finals is a tough pill to swallow, but I thank God for the opportunity and the unforgettable moments. We’ll be back,” he said.

Meanwhile, Blackwater and NLEX swapped guards yesterday in their continuous bids to improve.

The Elite, who will have the top pick in the coming draft, traded their star guard and rising scorer Carlo Lastimosa in exchange for seldom-used but full of potential spitfire James Forrester and a future second-round pick.

The two teams completed their transaction yesterday.
