SHOWING its championship mettle, Rain or Shine systematically decimated Blackwater, 98-92, for its second straight win in the 2016 Philippine Basketball Association Governors’ Cup Friday night at the Ynares Center in Antipolo City.

Dior Lowhorn and Jeff Chan backstopped Rain or Shine as they scored 20 apiece. Lowhorn added 12 rebounds, while Chan canned four triples.

Paul Lee had his best game of the conference, scoring 14 points and dishing out five assists for the Painters.

As a result, Rain or Shine moved up the ladder with an improved 2-1 slate, while Blackwater fell to a 1-2 mark.

Even with the win, Rain or Shine coach Yeng Guiao still sees a lot of room for improvement for his team.

“We still have to enhance some facets of our game. We’ll work on that in this long break that we’ll have,” said Guiao.

From the get-go, the Commissioner’s Cup champions stamped their class against the Elite.

The Elasto Painters established a significant 29-21 advantage at the end of one, using their cat-quick pace. In the second frame, Rain or Shine grabbed a double-digit lead, 49-37, just a few minutes before halftime after a basket from JR Quinahan. At intermission, Rain or Shine maintained its sizeable edge at 52-43.

A lay-up from Carlo Lastimosa inched Blackwater to just three, 93-90, with 49 seconds left.

However, the composed Painters quickly responded to shut the door on the Elite as Quinahan fished a foul from downtown and made all three free throws in the ensuing play, pushing Rain or Shine’s lead to a safe 96-90.

Jericho Cruz sealed the final tally with a lay-up with 17 seconds left.

Meanwhile, action shifts out of town for the first time this conference with Barangay Ginebra and Meralco, teams in the upper echelon with similar 2-1 slates, going at it in Lucena City at 5 p.m.

The game will be Ginebra’s third in a six-day span while Meralco is well rested as it is coming off a six-day rest.
