THE shuffling continues for GlobalPort in the Philippine Basketball Association.

After being involved in a lot of trades the past couple of weeks, the Batang Pier made another shift in direction, promoting Eric Gonzales to head coach replacing Pido Jarencio.

This switch was prompted by GlobalPort’s poor showing this Commissioner’s Cup, wherein it only managed three wins and finished dead last.

Serving as Jarencio’s assistant since he took over GlobalPort’s coaching chore in late 2013, Gonzales earned the nod from team management to take charge now.

But the situation isn’t exactly new to him.

Gonzales took over for Jarencio, as per the instructions of team management, for several games in the Commissioner’s Cup two seasons ago, while latter was re-assigned to a managerial post.

But after the break between conferences, Jarencio was reinstated was head coach of the Batang Pier.

Alaska assistant coach Louie Alas was the other candidate for the GlobalPort coaching post and was interviewed as well but in the end, it was Gonzales who clinched the job.

There were already several indications in the Batang Pier’s final games this conference that Jarencio’s time as tactician was coming to an end.

In GlobalPort’s last game of the conference before it went on an early vacation, team owner Mikee Romero reportedly ordered Jarencio to take a leave and appointed assistant coach John Cardel to call the shots.

In addition to Gonzales’ promotion and appointment, Franz Pumaren was also named by the team as consultant.

Pumaren was being eyed by GlobalPort to be its coach for quite sometime, but since he already took a coaching job at Adamson University just recently, he opted to be just consultant instead.

As for Jarencio’s future, it was reported that his alma mater University of Santo Tomas is pondering on taking him back after he resigned more than two years ago to pursue the head coaching job at GlobalPort.
